Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) reached another great milestone following the speedy completion and sailaway of its Selangkir Iron Duke (SKID) platform's jacket.

According to a press release, the remarkable achievement is a near three-month improvement compared to its predecessor, the Bugan jacket, which took 11 months to complete, without compromising safety.

In recognition of this outstanding achievement, the SKID project team will next week receive an award for its exemplary safety performance of achieving three million manhours without injury and for the successful sailaway of the jacket.

BSP Managing Director Dr Grahaeme Henderson said, "We are very pleased with the accelerated delivery of the SKID jacket a few days ago. It has been safely laid out on the seabed at its location which is approximately 40kms away from shore at a depth of about 50 metres, without compromising our stringent safety standards."

The fabrication work of the jacket started in mid November 2009 and completed in just eight months at the Marine Construction Yard (MCY) in Kuala Belait.

Following that, the four-legged jacket was installed with conductor guides for the wells. It was then loaded out on a barge and tugged away by a tugboat to its permanent offshore location. Then a special crane onboard a derrick barge was used to lay the jacket on the seabed. This particular activity is crucial to prepare for the structure's installation.

The next milestones will be the completion, sailaway and installation of the topside, which is currently fabricated at MCY, to be affixed to the whole structure.

This major project, similar to the previous ones, has benefited Brunei's local supply chain. Brunei Shell Petroleum in its continual effort to nurture the growth of local businesses, has hired local contractors to support this work.

An integrated team of BSP engineers and contractors worked hard to complete this project quickly and safely.

The speedy completion of the jacket is also attributed to a combination of three elements: simplified designs, faster fabrication and more manhours put in.

All of the fabrication was done by Syarikat Juruteraan Sistematik Sdn Bhd (SKS), a local contractor company who also worked on the Bugan and Mampak jackets.

Dr Henderson further said, "We will continue this amazing rate of progress and, enabled with the full support and technical excellence within the BSP and local contracting community, there is no doubt that the full potential of SKID will be realised."
