In his speech, the chairperson of the event and manager of E & P Tuition School, Mr Ting Tiu Pheng, said that the school was proud to organise an event of this nature. Present as the guest of honour was Dr Yong Chee Tuan.
In his speech, Mr Ting Tiu Pheng said the aim of the competition was to promote mental arithmetic and mathematic studies to the younger generation, enhance their skill and power in calculation, to foster and create a relationship between local and overseas students as well as improving the overall competency the younger generation
The competition saw students participate in four categories - foundation, elementary, advanced and research levels. E & P Tuition School was established in 1998. The school was the first institution to introduce mental arithmetic in Brunei Darussalam.
The chairperson added "It is our pride to introduce such enrichment courses here in Brunei. We deeply believe that it will benefit students in their studies as well as improve their intelligence and mental abilities, therefore upgrading their capacity to overcome challenges in the future".
"We are also pleased to have our counterparts from Taiwan participating in this event. These students here are the best in mental arithmetic and mathematics at the national level.
The last event we held was in 2005, and it saw participation from Taiwan, Indonesia and Singapore. Unfortunately, our other counterparts were unable to join us this time, however, we hope that an event such as this can be conducted annually with more participation, in the near future".
