The Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday imposed a $1,500 fine, or three months' imprisonment in default, on a 21-year-old Vietnamese woman who pleaded guilty to consuming controlled drugs.

Senior Magistrate Muhammed Faisal PD Hj Kefli heard that Tran Thi Quyet consumed methylemphetamine on November 4, 2011 and that Narcotics Control Bureau officers found her urine sample - which was tested by the Department of Scientific Services - positive for the Class 'A' drug.

First-time drug abusers could face a maximum imprisonment of 10 years or a maximum fine of B$20,000 if convicted, while second-time or subsequent offenders will be given a starting point of three years' imprisonment.
