The Malay Department of Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB successfully organised the National Malay Speech Competition for non-native speakers of Malay on July 12. Held at the school's Boon Pang Hall, the competition was meant to encourage students who use Malay as their second language to acclimatise themselves to the language.
The guest of honour was the Acting Director-General of Education, Ministry of Education, Pg Hjh Sarah binti Pg Hj Kamaluddin. In her speech, she stressed the importance of Malay Language as the official language of the country and urged all students to brush up the language with determination. She also lauded the effort of the Malay Department of Chung Hwa Middle School in line with the vision of Language and Literature Bureau to popularise the Malay Language amongst people of different races and language backgrounds.
"A competition like this will manifest itself, benefiting different students from different cognitive levels like a beacon that lights the way," the guest of honour concluded. After the recital of surah al-Fatihah by Ustaz Mohd Hairol Haimi bin Hj Usop, the competition commenced with students from seven different schools delivering their speech in Malay.
The participating schools this year included Chung Hwa Middle School BSB, Chung Hwa Middle School Kuala Belait, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Chung Ching Middle School Seria, Seri Mulia Sarjana School, St Andrew's School and St George's School. All participants were divided into two categories - lower secondary and upper secondary.
Under the lower secondary category, Jong Fung Yen from Chung Ching Middle School Seria was adjudged the champion this year.
The runner-up was Shirley Wong Chee Eng from Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB. Awfa bin Mohamed Sharif was the second runner-up.
In the upper secondary category, Mobassir Ali bin Alimudin from Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB emerged the winner, while Fedeerick Loh Thek Juen from St Andrew's School and Aminnoor bin Muhammad Noorman won second and third places, respectively.
The two-hour competition culminated in a prize presentation ceremony and group photo session.
