Six national Brunei Para athletes yesterday left the country to take part in the 1st Malaysia Open Athletics Championship 2012 in a bid to smash their personal record to clinch qualification for the upcoming London Paralympic Games 2012.
The Para athletes who will be contesting in the Malaysian event are Shari bin Hj Juma'at. Rosli bin Hj Hastan, John Vianni Anak Chandau, Awang Raduan Awang Hj Mataha, Razali bin Subi and Dayang Nor Hensan binti Awang Hj Mataha.
They will be participating in javelin, shot put, discus, long jump and 100m dash.
The Brunei Darussalam contingent is led by chef-de-mission Awang Mohd Azam bin Dato Paduka Hj Md Salleh.
The tournament from April 20-29 at the Stadium Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur will see 20 countries including Brunei participating. Some of the countries who will send their Para athletes are Japan, China, Iran and the other Asean countries.
According to the national coach for throwing events, Lim Chee Wei: "We will try our best. This time our athletes will try to break their personal best record in the competition and hopefully achieving a new record so that they can also qualify for the London Paralympic 2012.
With a superb achievement in the Asean Para Games in Indonesia last year, he said: "Shari and Alihan already can qualify for the London Paralympic. In this competition in Malaysia, Shari will try to better his personal best record while Alihan was not included in the contingent because his specialty event is not available in the Malaysian competition."
